AEROSPACE
Fiber optic sensors are small and light. Aircraft engineers often need hundreds or thousands of sensors for each application. Today, most fiber optic sensors for aerospace applications are used in ground tests and design. However, some aircraft are already flying with networks of fiber optic sensors on board. Sensor interrogation equipment is now smaller and more rugged, and can be made to perform to harsh MIL specs. The long term vision is that all new aircraft will fly with Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) optical sensors. The knowledge FBG sensors provide will improve safety, prolong the life of airframes, reduce maintenance and improve the in-flight efficiency of engines.
Fiber Bragg Grating sensors test structural integrity of wings and fuselage components, performance of engines, load on landing gear, and icing on wings. FBG sensors for strain, temperature, and acceleration come in rugged packages that are easy to install. Passive operation of FBG sensors is an advantage when sensors and fiber leads must run through fuel tanks. Installation time continues as one of the main drivers for use of FBG sensors for aircraft. Since dozens, even hundreds, of sensors can be multiplexed on a single fiber, only one fiber lead must be returned to the data acquisition equipment.
Micron Optics has many customers in the Aerospace industry including:
Micron Optics FBG optical sensors deliver all these benefits with optimal cost and performance characteristics that meet the requirements of the aerospace industry. All sensors distributed by Micron Optics are guaranteed to be compatible with the Micron Optics line of optical sensing interrogators and ENLIGHT sensor system software to ensure accuracy and ease of use.
